Windy with a Chance of Deer

The wind is blowing hard today. This is a normal winter thing here, and more common than snow this time of year. Down along the front range of the Rockies, the winds can gust up to 100 miles per hour. I don't think it's that bad here, but the forecast says gusts up to 65 mph.

The fox was here this morning when I got up, waiting for some bread.

He hates the wind and was so nervous he could hardly eat. I suppose that the wind is one of his main enemies, because living in the forest as he does, heavy falling branches falling out of the sky could kill him without notice.

Last night I noticed the motion sensor yard light came on, and of course nothing was out there, but eventually a herd of deer appeared next door. There was a buck with a large rack, and four or five others. I didn't get a very good look at them, but the buck remained in the front yard eating grass for about 20 minutes. The grass is still green under the snow, so maybe they will be back for more.

In previous years we saw some deer around here maybe once a week, but this year has been different, and up until last night I'd only seen them twice. Here is the buck earlier this summer:

His antlers are three times bigger now.

I'm so pleased to see them, and hope they have a good winter.

Aren't they pretty? I love it when he lies down with his feet stretched out in front as if he's admiring them.

The best part is no neighbor dogs barking all night.

And just think all I see are boa constrictors, crocodiles, etc.
I do know we have been having very heavy wind action the past few years.

Seems like it's been windy all across the country. I think it finally died down in Las Vegas, so that calm will eventually work its way east.

Do you think that if you put up a smallish dog-house like thingy at the edge of the wood, the fox might use it? You could put stuff in it he likes?

I'm afraid not, although I've thought about it. He is seriously spooked by man-made structures like the patio cover.
I was thinking about how I could make a cache of dog biscuits for him - bury them in one of his usual places and hope the squirrels won't raid it, but I don't think he would go near it, and the squirrels will steal them all. On the other hand, maybe that will make it easier for him to catch them.
