A Week Later

Judging by the height of the trash left behind, the river was at least 10 times higher than normal.

This is the worst spot on the highway to my house. I just hug over to the far side.

Typical debris to be cleaned up. This is our little dry stream, now running a steady 8 inches deep.

I wake up from a nap, and look out the front window to see if somehow I dreamt this situation, but it's always still there:

Tonight I'm staying with friendly cats:

It is so nice to have a place to stay (in town, 3 hours from my home) that is sane and sensible compared to my in-laws' house. These people here just let a guest find their own way, say 'help yourself to what you need, we're off to do some things.' You need a place like that - where you can come and go with no questions asked. I feel so much better after a nap and a bowl of soup.

I'm looking forward to visiting those cats when our highway to town is open again in early December.

The lady of the house was gone all the time because her brother was in intensive care with West Nile, and the teenage son was busy with his friends, so it was nice to have the cats hanging around with me so I felt like part of the family.

I hope you can enlist some help in cleaning up. one step at a time. so nice to be staying where you are not treated as a guest! and to have cats there as well!

When my mother was in her last days, she called this gal's mother and asked her to do some shopping for her, and when they came to the house to deliver it, my mom gave her an art print she'd always admired. They still have it in their living room. That family is the sort that people call 'the salt of the earth.'

I'm glad you found a decent haven. That is not Eloise. What is kitty's name? I felt similarly after Charley, when I'd look outside and see the pool cage alumninum in the pool, the orange tree in the pool, the former owner's grill in the pool (which turned everything black) and, of course, we had no power or water for a week, but nothing like other communities like Sanibel where people were evacuated and not allowed back for a month. And when you went anywhere by car, you saw telephone poles down and tons of trees stripped or uprooted. It took several years for things to look normal again. I hope your area can recover quickly.

Those cats had strange names that I didn't catch - like mojito but that wasn't it. We'll be talking about this flood for many decades to come, until it's replaced by something worse.

They get better every day as I check off the next step to getting things done.

Wow. Let's hope that this time next year it will all be a distant memory.

Things will be different from what they were, but in some ways better.
