Unbelievable

I went up to Estes Park to renew my license plates. It is starting to be a problem for us that the tags on the truck expire in November in case I want to go to Las Vegas earlier in the fall. The renewal paperwork doesn't get forwarded by the post office, so it can't be handled from out of state.

I called the license plate office yesterday and asked about changing the expiration month. They told me if we have another vehicle that comes due in a different month we can combine them so it's all one month. It's not a perfect solution because the car comes up in October, but a month earlier is better than nothing.

When I got there the woman I'd talked to wasn't there, and the one who was helping me was arguing with me that changing the month on the pickup wasn’t going to do me much good because it could only change to a month earlier when the Camry is due. But I said every little bit would help, and the other woman backed me up.

Now here is the incredible part: the amount due was changed and instead of $77 it was $27 to register my truck for the coming year. Before I could say anything, she said “it’s complicated – don’t ask why.” Something to do with fees and charges. Fine. I didn’t argue and I didn’t ask, I just handed over my credit card.

Snow fell in the high mountains last night, and it was a little frosty here overnight, but it's warmed up into the 70s today.

We still don't know why all the fees were waived, and I feel a little guilty that I didn't fall all over myself to thank the woman for saving me $50, but it really didn't have anything to do with her, it's just how the system worked. And she said 'don't ask' so I was working hard at keeping my mouth shut.

Your solutions are always mind-boggling. I am dreading having my driver's license renewed because they now demand more documentation that you are who you are and mine is complicated. 18 scarves? Better you than moi.

That enhanced documentation required by the DMV has been a huge mess for all the states. As you know, women have the harder time because if they have been married a couple of times they have to produce all their marriage licenses. I can imagine a lot of situations where the license could have been lost in the shuffle of life.

I'm hoping I can find that Christmas Issue in a store, to save on postage.
What's Maxine saying? The print is too small to read.

I'm going to post Maxine one of these days when I can't think of a thing to post. Oh wait. That's today.

I'm not too sure of the vehicle registration you have over there, It has got to be similar to ours, but we use different terminology. Fortunately, we live only a few miles from the national vehicle registration centre (D.V.L.A), the only problem is the loooonnnngggg wait to be dealt with! It is a nightmare.

I have some questions about the license plates over where you are, and whether the numbers mean anything, or are just random. Our plate numbers used to indicate what county they were issued from, and it was nice to know if someone was local-local, or from another part of the state. Now there is no system like that, the cars can be from anywhere. Not that it matters, just nice to know.

I am imagining your beaver like industry getting everything ready to leave.

There are plenty of mental health breaks. Today I strolled up the driveway to look for big fish. I'm starting to feel a little sad to be leaving.

You get new plates every year? In NY the truck can be registered online for 2 years.

We get new sticky tags to go on the existing plates every year, to the tune of a couple hundred dollars for a newer car.

I'm not sure under what circumstances we can get new actual license plates without buying a new car, or upgrading to one of the specialty or vanity plates. The big relief is that the state was going to require us to get emission testing this year, but have now delayed it until the end of next year. I was really sweating that because my time to get it done before I leave town is so short.

We warmed up to a toasty 60F. It's sunny but just a little too chilly to sit out on the deck.

Thanks for translating from the centigrade. Today I ordered the Interweave Knitting Christmas Issue, whatever it's called, 60 patterns. I hope I get my money's worth out of it. $14 something, but the postage was $5.39, so it cost around $20. I shipped a bunch of my yarn to Las Vegas because I was afraid we'd run out of room for it in the car. A friend of mine has decided we need to make 18 scarves for Christmas gifts for a group of people she knows, so I have my eye on getting that done.

So it cost less for 2 cars? Nice! Glad ya went through with it.

I don't know (having kept my mouth shut so firmly) if the renewals are going to be cheaper in coming years because of the combination, or it was just a fluke this first year. But $50 is $50. I'm thinking of saving it for the slots when I get there Saturday.
