Here in Colorado the police can stop you if they see your seatbelt is not properly fastened. They even have routine roadside inspections to catch offenders.

Last week one of the officers encountered this situation and snapped a picture:

Yes, that's a gas can strapped into the child safety seat, and the child, wearing a diaper is on the other side of the seat wearing a lap belt while the shoulder belt is behind him.

"Colorado law requires all children under age eight to be in a child safety seat when traveling in a motor vehicle. The law stipulates a minimum fine of $82 per violation.

Aurora Police said the driver in this case was written three restraint violations.

Police said the driver told officers the child lets himself out of the car seat. The officer then asked if the child put the gas can in the car seat and buckled it up, then buckled himself into a seatbelt on the other side of the car."

I can just hear the driver pointing out that at least the kid had a lap belt on.

The picture was really something, but that story was the frosting on the cake.

How stupid can people be.This is very dangerous to have gas can in the front seat.
A likely story from mom

Yes, I think it was a man who thought this up, and I'm sure he thought he'd done the right thing to secure the gas can to keep it from spilling in the car. If there'd been duct tape involved, we'd know for sure.

Mom? Heck no! Only a man would value his gas can more than his child.
