Short Growing Season

The last frost date in my area is Memorial Day. We have to restrain ourselves from putting out plants and starting our water pumps until then, and this year reminds us of why that is. Once the storm moves out, the sky will clear and the overnight low will be in the 20s.

At 6 am there is 3 inches of very wet snow on the ground and more falling fast. Fortunately, the outside temp is 34 degrees and it will warm up more after the sun comes up, so we won't get as much accumulation as in the forecast.

Even with this snow, we have a male hummingbird guarding the feeders, chasing off certain other birds.

Pretty quick we'll go out with brooms and try to beat the snow off the bushes.

Memorial Day is planting day here too. I used to watch the ten-day forecast and plant earlier but the plants actually grow much faster in the greenhouse where I but them, so I shall wait. But I'll be planting seeds on Sunday so I won't have to water with rain expected on Sunday night.

Snow??? What's snow??? We are having temps in the high 80s and low 90s plus clear skies and an ocean breeze--we do need rain!

So that's life in the mountains, snow and late frost. Soon I will be envious of that snow. It went up to 90 here yesterday, but dropped to normal again today.

lovely photo. why do you need to clear the bushes of snow. Does that help the bushes?

Heavy spring snow snaps branches and can wreck trees.
