Shift

Did you feel it? This morning the center of the universe shifted about 700 miles northeast.

In exchange for a lower fare I had open seating on the airplane so was lucky enough to get a window seat in an exit row. It was first-class leg room!

The destination airport doesn't have jetways, they use rolling steps and used the rear exit stairs in addition to the front door for unloading the passengers. It was very nice to not have to walk up that long aisle to the front, and so much faster. Within 10 minutes of my getting off, the new passengers (headed back to Las Vegas) were getting on, also using the rear entry in addition to the front. Now that there is no free food or drink there is a lot less cabin trash so apparently they don't even bother to send in cleaning crews.

One interesting thing about this particular airline: the seats don't recline, no buttons, removing an entire element of aggravation: no seat back inches from your nose, and the flight attendants don't have to nag about 'full upright position' at landing time.

The second photo is the high mountain in the first photo, taken from over Denver where the Rocky Mountains rise abruptly from the flatness of the Great Plains.

How are things at my house? There is snow on the ground and some animal tracks but not very many around the house. It was sunny and warm today. The standby generator is doing fine, with no power outage events since I left. It turns itself on once a week for a test, and that appears to be working as planned.

Welcome home! Love that view of the Rockies, rising up in all their glory. I was seven years old the first time I saw them with my parents and two brothers, riding along on our two month car trip all over the western/southwestern U.S. Coming from flat Ohio, those mountains dazzled me, as does the memories of Colorado and winding our way over those peaks. Wow.
Glad all is well at your Colorado home. Sending love to you and the fox!

Thanks! It's good to be home and find everything is fine. No fox, and no tracks in the snow, but he might show up eventually. It was warm today and a lot of the snow melted.

Soon the fox will be visiting. I hope you have your camera handy.

It's over by the window ready for the first sighting.

Nice. I'm claustrophobic and insist on a window seat, except that I no longer enjoy flying whatever. There seems to be a good snow pack in CO. That's good! I hope your fox shows up to greet you!

For this time of year the snow pack is not good - it's only 22% of normal - but still pretty. Everyone is praying for big March and April storms (our snowiest months).

The window seat is my favorite. I love to look down at all the towns and farms and now wind turbines. Looking down at mountains is wonderful.

Me too! When I fly over the southwest I follow the roads to the places I've driven in my car, see the detours where I got lost, and look for my relatives' homes. Going other directions, I marvel at the rivers, the crop circles, and the geography in general. Then, I like to guess what big cities we are flying over, and I look for airports at the small towns. Never a dull moment in a window seat.

The window seat (this ancient says) was way more fun before jet travel. For the whole trip you could see the land you were flying over. Also, passengers were mostly well-dressed business passengers and fun to talk with.
No fip-flops, shorts, beachwear, babies, etc. Ah ...

What spectacular views. Advantage of window seat: Great view on a clear day. Disadvantage: no elbow room for knitting. Advantage of aisle seat: lots of elbow room in the aisle for knitting. Disadvantage: ruined knitting from people walking into your elbow and bruises from being whacked by snack trolley. Advantage of middle seat: none unless there is no one seated in window or aisle seats. Disadvantage: no knitting, no view, no sleeping in case your head ends up on the strange fat guy's shoulder.

I always hope for a window seat and am sorry when there's clouds and I can't see the ground. If there is, I try to knit a skinny scarf on short needles so there's not a lot of arm movement.
