Saying Goodbye

I realized I don't have pictures of the sides and back of our little red cabin that is going to be elevated four feet. A lot has to happen to get to the end, so I try not to think about it.

We are tearing down the back part and will build a whole new structure for the kitchen, laundry, and bath.

The part of the structure that is covered with dirt is rotting away. This back part was built in 1937.

We're going to save the doors in case they can be re-used. The shelves inside are just shelves, nothing special.

Demolition should start sometime this week.

Wish me luck, I have a feeling I'll need it.

Oh, I had forgotten about you and that cabin. I'll keep you in mind as we work on it.

There is something so homey about that little log cabin. It speaks
to me of pretty quilts and iron beds. You are preserving it for those
who come after you so it must be a good feeling.

I've never had a good feeling about that particular cabin. It's always been hard to maintain and keep clean, the mice have a heyday, bugs come out of the ceilings, and the attic of the back part is full of rodent poop that occasionally sifts down into the living area. A guy who lived there in the 1960s killed himself across the highway via a hose from the exhaust of his car. I hope that by making this big change it is reborn into a place I can feel comfortable in.

It must be hard to tear down something so venerable and family-built. But you'll be saving the rest of it. Worrying about decay would be so much worse.

When I rebuild, I'll try to capture some of the spirit of the old space.
