River Ice

We've been having unseasonably warm weather, and the ice on the river is quickly melting.

The other morning, it was settling,

And later it had completely opened up:

Here is it today:

Yesterday the fox heard a noise that startled him, and raised his tail, ready to run. I'd never seen that before.

the fox is gorgeous! he seems kind of big to me. or maybe delaware foxes are just small because our state is so small.

Their winter fur is really bulky, makes them look big. Inside all that fur is a 12 pound animal, but I think the legs of the ones here are longer than some of the eastern foxes I've seen pictures of. It's like a cat on stilts.

I'm imagining the sounds of the ice cracking up, and happily remembering the different sounds of ice cracking on the creek in the meadow in front of my childhood home. I used to ice skate long distances on that creek, which ran a circuitous route through the village where I lived. Some were sharp cracks, others were like booms. Great memories!

I got here too late (or spring is too early) to hear the ice cracking this year, but I remember it from years past. The first time I heard it, I didn't know what that noise was.

I want him to bring up his wife and Kits later in the spring. We deserve to
get to see them.

Last year's family was so far away, and I don't know if it was even with her, but I've got hopes for this year.

We had very little snow this winter. My winter aconites have been blooming for a month. The tulip, daff and daylily leaves are up now.

It is also the ground temperature so things might be growing earlier since we had a really warm winter. Only below freezing a few times.

I was thinking that if spring is going to be so early this year, does that mean a longer growing season and my tomatoes might do better? But then I remembered that it's not just a matter of temperature, there is also the quality and duration of the sunlight falling on the plants. Time will tell.

He was showing off for you!!!

Probably so, he was very companionable that day - curled up under the tree within sight of the back door and took a nap for an hour, then moseyed off.

Your fox looks gorgeous in his Winter coat.

His coat looks so solid, I have to remind myself that there is a skinny little animal inside there. I wish he'd shed it all in one spot so I could send the fiber to you.
