Remember

Tomorrow is Mr. Tbend's birthday, and I just barely remembered it, but by chance, a couple of days ago I'd mailed him a check to deposit in his personal bank account, so he thought that was a birthday gift. Maybe the card I mailed today will reach him on Saturday.

I like this picture of a farm auction in the 1930s. All the shapes and angles formed by the barn roofs are so interesting, it would make a good study for an artist.

I moved my zucchini plants (started inside) outdoors yesterday, protected by these cozy water wall things:

Even if it got so cold the water in the channels around the outside froze, the plants inside would be protected.

The instructions say if the ground is frozen, put these out, and it will thaw out inside there, ready for seedlings. They also say for cooler climates like mine, they can be used all summer for peppers and eggplant - they like it warm. I might try that, too.

We have a 70% chance of rain tonight, and I am praying that we will get a decent amount of precipitation.

The mountain snow pack is only 48% of normal coming into spring this year. Last year it was 120% of normal, but most years it has been less than normal. I wonder when they are going to re-set the definition of 'normal.'

Nature scenes are fabulous. Our grounds get along without me. Now that Ed is so busy with guardian duties, he is not mowing either. I'd like to persuade him to just arrange for a mowing every two or three weeks (in mid-summer, it should be oftener) and also a bush trimming, but he is resisting. I used to do stuff and then some bloody storm (and it needn't even be a hurricane) comes along and destroys very hard work indeed. So I said, f. it.

Every time we move into a new house (not very often) the yard is okay, and then it gradually goes downhill because we don't know how to phase out the fading plants and bring in fresh ones.

It is easy to forget birthdays. I have to be careful to remember my grandchildren's. I know when they are, but sometimes I forget to keep track of exactly what day it is.

It's those exact days that are the problem for me.

It was l05 degrees in Eric Oklahoma day before yesterday. It almost set a
record. I have a tiny green tomato already but when it gets over 77 degrees
at night, they will not produce fruit.

It's much too early for that kind of heat, no matter where it is.

Good eye for catching the barn and all it's nuance. I like it a lot.

It's either a painting or a good jigsaw puzzle. It really has made me wish I could paint, and maybe it will inspire me to go ahead and try.

Donna saw at Aldi's a few weeks ago some blueberry plants that she decided we simply must have. We bought one that day and I planted it. What was I thinking in Delaware county. I built a cage to put over it covered with a clear plastic bag. Hopefully I covered it in time before the roots got too cold. We had to buy two more since somebody told me after the fact that they need company to fertilize each other. So the second two are growing nicely in their packaging in the mudroom. Good luck with the zucchini. It will be a few weeks yet before I can plant that outside from seed.

I put in three blueberry bushes when we moved into our house 40+ years ago. I get a few berries from each one each year. I fight the robins for them. I used to cover the bushes with netting but one year a robin got trapped inside and died. I felt so bad I quit using the netting. Let the robins win.

I hope your blueberries do well. It's always exciting to plant something new: the hope and the promise of bountiful harvests. I planted some iris bulbs last fall, and only one of them is showing signs of life, even though our days have been in the high 60s lately.

Wouldn't it be easier to go to Whole Foods and get zucchini???

I refuse to pay for zucchini because, not only do the stores charge too much for it, when the plants get to producing, people are desperate to find ways to use it all. That's how zucchini bread came to be (I hate zucchini bread). Now, I have to admit that my zucchini plants don't over-produce, but there is a principle involved.

Wow, that's quite a difference. Hope you get some rain.
Nice save with hubby's birthday.

He never forgets when my birthday is, but he doesn't give me anything, take me out to eat, or otherwise observe it, so it doesn't make much difference.
