Relatives

Once a year we are visited by the family who will inherit our property here. I picked them because they have five children (soon to be six), so there will probably be someone to keep the property in the family for many decades to come. The children are all young now, 12 and under, so this is the time to imprint a love for this area upon them. Of course there are no guarantees, but it's the best shot we have.

We need to talk to them about the red cabin - what they envision for it, and see if they want to chip in on it. If set it up as an RV hookup and find someone who wants to keep their trailer here year-round, we could make a lot more money than we'd ever make renting it out, and no work for us. Eventually these cousins can finish the red cabin how they want it, so their siblings can stay there when they visit.

[Martin: for a few years it might be just a shell suitable for camping out in, but the outside will be red.]

Many of them have allergies, and it's always a challenge to cook for them, not that I try to cover every meal: she brings her own cooking pots and turns out vast selections of strange-looking food. The other day I made some gluten free gingersnaps for the dad that are very good, and tonight I made chocolate cupcakes and fluffy frosting that are gluten and dairy free, no small feat because I didn't have any of that funny milk - soy, or almond, or cashew, etc. - to substitute for milk, or coconut oil to substitute for butter. Maybe they would have been better with some of that stuff, but who's to say. Flavorwise, I thought the fell into the category of 'nice texture' meaning they don't taste like much, but I'm not a chocolate fan. Mr. Troutbend liked them, but he'll eat anything. It's somebody's birthday, so maybe they will sing happy birthday to her when they eat them.

Tomorrow they have friends coming who have seven kids, and there are just enough cupcakes for all 12, but not enough for the parents. I have a feeling the parents might cut them in half since it's junky food, and they are very health conscious.

Thursday I'm going to make Jello with layers of different colors. I always make it for these kids, and once again, it's junky, but they get a big kick out of it. And s'mores. Today was national s'mores day.

There is an owl hooting outside - very close, and I had to make sure the cat was inside. I'm worried about our baby marmot, and hope it has the sense to stay in its burrow at night.

We have been so flat-out busy with cabin rental guests lately. I was letting people stay for one night, which is a lot of work, but I look at it as marketing because one of those customers has already referred his family members, who've reserved three more segments - all multi-day. We really needed to meet some new nice people who will come back almost every year.

Shopping with someone who second-guesses every decision would drive me nuts (and I've done it). We are selling a 2011 Kia, 24,000 miles, perfect condition, all the bells and whistles. (Ed is selling it for a ward who can no longer drive.) We asked $11,5 from a friend, although it is worth more. She agonized, she sat on 12 fences, she said no even though her family and friends said she was nuts to say no to it. You can't fix people whose every decision has to pass a standard of perfection that it is not possible to achieve. I'm surprise she can get out of bed in the morning. You get out of bed, you could have an accident.

Once a year, around Christmastime, we take my cousin Betsy shopping so she can pick out what she needs/wants. Last year she was sulking because she had her heart set on a new coat because she couldn't work the zipper on the one she had, but we were able to fix it, so then she couldn't use that as an excuse to buy a new one. She refused to look at anything, including new coats, and we didn't figure out until later what the problem was.

I'm in the catch-up phase of cooking for Ed who is now on a low-fat, low-carb, low salt diet (a special Hell since he is also picky). It happens I am lactose intolerant, so I buy 2% Lactaid and it is fine and on the plus side, it is good for two months, unlike regular milk that can go bad in 10 days. And there is no difference in taste.

That long shelf life is very attractive. We could stock up on milk for just about the whole summer.

"Funny" milk is the best milk!
Kudos to figuring how to cater to a variety of diets. That is a challenge.

I had a friend who claimed her three kids each had combinations of dairy-wheat-you name it allergies - not all the allergies per kid, one had some of them, another had others of them. Then all of a sudden they could eat anything. I asked one of them what cured him and he said 'acupuncture.'

Is there such a thing as gluten-free, low fat, low carb pizza with fake cheese that gets delivered? LOL

Colorado is turning into such a Granola state, it wouldn't surprise me if people order it that way. It reaches a point where the game isn't worth the prize. Sending hugs to all those cats.

I guess that rules out hot dogs and potato chips for the children, which
would be my short cut to feeding twelve.

The kids aren't gluten free, only the dad, but at least one of them is dairy free, and the mom says she can't eat dairy now (not sure if this is temporary for her pregnancy) so she bought hot dogs and buns for her kids, and the horde that is coming over today can eat anything, from what I understand, so she bought sour cream and cheese for them to put on their chili. It was excruciating watching her shop for groceries, because every item that went into her cart involved some sort of internal debate, and sometimes it was external. It was Sam's Club, so the selection was 40% or less of what they have at Safeway - not much to debate about, but she managed.
