Rare Death Valley Bacteria

I've heard that the reason migrating birds are able to navigate is there is something in their brain that is drawn by the magnetism of the North Pole, but the thought of magnets in growing cells is very exciting.

"A University of Nevada, Las Vegas microbiologist says he and his team members have identified and cultivated a type of magnetic bacteria in Death Valley that could one day contribute to the biotech industry.

Researcher Dennis Bazylinski said the bacteria navigate along magnetic field lines because of the mineral produced inside their cells. His team is the first to isolate a rarely-studied type that produces the mineral greigite and is found 280 feet below sea level in the valley's Badwater Basin.

The greigite may have different uses in drug delivery and medical imaging than the minerals found in other magnetic bacteria. More research can begin now that the scientists know how to grow the Death Valley bacteria."

I hope it is a good thing.

It will have some drug name and the patient won't even realize that it's magnetic.

Science is so cool.

I think biochemistry must be a fascinating field, a frontier every bit as remote and intriguing as outer space, and in many ways it has more potential for doing good.

An acquaintance just sent me a 100 page document by "respected medical" authorities outlining the imminent death of everyone on the planet due to unwanted magnetic fields and radiation from cell phone use, cell phone towers, microwave ovens, etc., etc. I know some caution is good. I wrote her that whoever wrote the piece should realize less is more. No one is going to read a hundred pages. I described it as an infomercial. I also don't think we are going to give up our gadgets. That's the way it is.

Most recent improvements in medicine and technology aren't really new, they are just improvements on developments from years ago. Something new and unexpected may be a major development leading to progress that most haven't imagined.

Little beasts racing around in my bloodstream eating up bad stuff like a PacMan game does sound like what white blood cells have done all along, doesn't it?

Sounds like it may have a lot of potential. I love medical news.

Let's hope we never need some exotic treatment to save us. I want to live just long enough and then check out gracefully.

That's very fascinating. I will have to watch for more information about this.

I envision them programming these magnetic bacteria to eat cancer, and then implant metal in a tumor and the bacteria swarm over there and eat it up.

you always have interesting news.

Anything but politics for me if I can help it. (Aside from my puppet for president post, hah.)
