Memorial Day Flowers

Growing up, my school was over for the summer by Memorial Day. That's when our town swimming pool opened up, and we spent almost every day over there until it closed on Labor Day. School never started until after Labor Day, so we had a full three months of summer.

In addition to the swimming pool opening, Memorial Day was a big day in our small town. Everyone gathered flowers from their beautiful gardens - lilacs, iris, and orange poppies to decorate the family graves. My grandmother had several of those metal flower vases that were saved from past funerals, kept in the basement just for Memorial Day.

Now, there are peonies that take care of themselves.

I am always looking for flowers that "take care of themselves". I'll see if peonies will thrive in the sub-tropics. Not every flower does.

The flowers are lovely. My grandmother planted Iris on her children's
graves and they are blooming still.

What keeps them from being the perfect flower is they bloom for such a short time. I've never seen the ones that come back in fall.

To me, iris is one of the most beautiful flowers there is. I love their scent, the vibrant, pure colors, and their crispness. Plus, they are fairly easy to grow, once they get going. I'm struggling with them here, and it breaks my heart.

I LOVE peonies--my 2nd favorite flower!!!

Yes, I remember Memorial Day started the 'summer season' and we didn't go back to school until the Monday AFTER Labor Day Monday---and we learned twice as much as kids do today and we did it in 9 months!!!

It's hard for me to pick a favorite of anything because as soon as I do, I think of another favorite, and then what about...
