Remember "March comes in like a lion, and leaves like a lamb?" This usually means strong winds early in the month of March. We've been having those winds this past week, and I am starting to worry that our seasons are ahead of themselves and we'll have 80 degree days in May and 100 degree days in June and July. Fire season is here already with brush fires being caused by cigarettes thrown out of car windows.
The gusts in my area were 90 mph, and a nice blue spruce across the river from my dining room blew over. The roots are surprisingly shallow, and if the soil is dried out by the winds, there's not much to hold them.
It wasn't just here that trees went down - big trees all around the area were snapped off without uprooting and others uprooted, and the power went out for six hours on Friday morning. My standby generator did its job, so when I woke up at 5 am and hadn't heard it start up, it was a little while until I realized the power was out. So much better than the alternative - I had to go to town regardless, so would have struggled with the garage door opener and other things.
