In like a Lion

Remember "March comes in like a lion, and leaves like a lamb?" This usually means strong winds early in the month of March. We've been having those winds this past week, and I am starting to worry that our seasons are ahead of themselves and we'll have 80 degree days in May and 100 degree days in June and July. Fire season is here already with brush fires being caused by cigarettes thrown out of car windows.

The gusts in my area were 90 mph, and a nice blue spruce across the river from my dining room blew over. The roots are surprisingly shallow, and if the soil is dried out by the winds, there's not much to hold them.

It wasn't just here that trees went down - big trees all around the area were snapped off without uprooting and others uprooted, and the power went out for six hours on Friday morning. My standby generator did its job, so when I woke up at 5 am and hadn't heard it start up, it was a little while until I realized the power was out. So much better than the alternative - I had to go to town regardless, so would have struggled with the garage door opener and other things.

Where's your snow?

The chinook winds took it all away, Chinook means "Snow eater" in one of the Native American languages. We went from 5 or 6 inches to bare ground a couple days later. It's odd to us how it is back east, like in Vermont, where they don't see the dirt for most of the winter.

I keep wondering what 90mph winds sound like. That's sad when trees are destroyed. Adds to the dryness problem.

The high winds moan around your house and whistle in the windows and if there is anything loose like a shingle or siding you hear them flapping. You can hear it in the the tall trees, a roaring sound that rises and falls in volume. Pine trees are self-pruning, meaning rather large branches fall to the ground or onto decks and so on. Animals hate the wind because stuff is falling out of the sky without warning.

The dipper birds are singing down in the river. They have more songs in their vocabulary than mockingbirds, and can walk on the bottom of the river looking for bugs.

Nice weather is nice, but we know that we will pay for it down the line somehow.

So sorry to hear about the trees. I felt badly when Charley hit our area back in 2004 and destroyed almost every tree on the island. We are having exceptionally mild February -- climate change catching up.

A lot of people look at it as insult after injury to lose these trees a few years after the flood because they lost the dirt around them in the flood.
