Life in Colorado

A story on Denver's Channel 7 website:

DENVER - A local nonprofit hit the streets of Downtown Denver on Christmas Eve and gave away a thousand free, pre-rolled marijuana joints to the homeless and anyone else who wanted one.

"Merry Christmas and a puff puff, New Year's," said one woman who accepted a joint.

Nick Dicenzo, the founder of Cannabis Can and the one responsible for handing out the free weed, said they're trying to raise awareness about homelessness and encourage people to donate to their cause.

The cause? To raise money to buy several RV's and provide restrooms and showers for those in need. Dicenzo said their goal is to use weed for good and to bring people together to make a difference.

"'Cannabis can make a difference,' is kind of what we're standing for," said Dicenzo.

"What do you say to people who don't agree with what you're doing?" asked Denver7 Reporter Jennifer Kovaleski.

"Merry Christmas, Happy Cannamas -- would you like some rolling papers for tobacco?" replied Dicenzo.

In addition to handing out the free joints, which Dicenzo says he grew legally, volunteers also passed out flyers and business cards with information on where people can donate.

"A lot of the people we spoke with really were just like, 'if I had regular access to a shower, and a haircut my life would be so much better - I'd have so much more opportunity'," said Dicenzo.

And while not everyone wanted a free joint, Dicenzo said the message was about so much more.

"Spread the word, spread the cheer, to give back," he said.

It is illegal to smoke weed in public, but weed can be given as a gift. The only rules are that the person has to be 21 or over, no money can be exchanged, and each person can only carry up to ounce of weed.

"Which makes the logistics of this really tricky, but yeah I have lots of people with one ounce on their person," said Dicenzo.

I wish that I could have had legal access to pot to have eased some of
the pain that Bobby suffered. His oncologist prescribed it.

I thought so hard about taking some to him, but with all the news stories about how the sheriffs in Oklahoma and Kansas are profiling cars from Colorado to search for pot, and those two states are suing Colorado for facilitating interstate pot smuggling, I didn't have the courage to try.

Nobody ever gave away free beer in the day and it would have been legal here in NY. Oh well, times change!

That's what I was thinking - that nobody (that we know of) has ever gone around the homeless park handing out beers.

Their method of drawing publicity is kind of strange and bound to bring at least an equal amount of criticism. But access to bathrooms and showers is something I'd gladly support. One step better is to have more public bathrooms built into public spaces. .. I notice you didn't answer Martin whether you got a free doobie or not.

I'm not in Colorado right now. Now that someone's done it as a publicity stunt, I wonder if it will catch on. Colorado has the annual 420 festival (Proposition 420) on April 20 every year, and there's probably lots of sharing at that. Check this out: https://coloradohighlifetours.com/denver-420-festival-tour-2016/

Better a five or ten dollar bill so they can eat.

I have had pothead friends whose brains weren't functioning, so I don't agree that pot is without its downside. One free reefer to the homeless seems harmless enough, but as was mentioned, a free pass to a haircut and a shower might have been more useful.

The shower and haircut will come later when the nonprofit handing out the free pot raises funding to buy recreational vehicles they can drive around town to reach the homeless. The free pot was to bring attention to their goals.

I thought you were in LV! Sure you didn't take some of that free grass!

It's an odd feeling to be from a state where that's okay, but I guess we'll get used to is.
