Laugh at Yourself

I have an auntie-in-law who grew up with my mother and reminds me of my mom in some ways, mainly her enjoyment with playing practical jokes and snooping in peoples' business, and enjoying life in general. Years ago I was riding in the car with her and we passed a little golf course. She said: "That's a driving range over there, but I never see any cars on it." I didn't say anything, just let it slide.

Then, I got to thinking that I didn't want her son-in-law, whom she refers to as Satan, and when I finally met him, I totally agreed, to have this bit of ammunition to make fun of her. Actually, he is so satanic he wouldn't bother with such a mundane topic. But I didn't know that at the time, so after I had been home for awhile, it was still nagging at me, and I wrote her a letter to tell her it was for practicing golf, not driving in cars. Next time I saw her we had a good laugh about it.

The other day we were driving home, and I once again saw the Valley Ham Shack on the west side of Loveland. For the umpteenth time I wondered if their hams are any good, where their smoker is, and why they never seem to have any business.

"It's a good thing they also do amateur radio so there's something to do between customers," I was thinking. And then the penny dropped. They don't sell hams AND spend time on the radio while they wait for ham customers, it's just the radio business.

Dang! I am very glad I didn't walk in there looking for some cured meat.

Anyhow, if you need ham radio supplies, Valley Ham Shack is Northern Colorado's Only Amateur Radio Store and Exclusive U.S. distributor of DZKit Products.

Now this looks like all those Asian spammer posts here on MyBloggers. Just call me Sabib from Lahore.

I'd much rather laugh at myself than someone else, because I always get my own jokes.

Late husband was a ham. Stayed up all night messaging with Morse code. Taught me the code. (I still dit dah in my mind as a distraction.) Electronics was a different story. Never got my ticket. When I was a kid, was with my mom in Lincoln Park (Chicago) on the way to the beach at North Avenue. Passed a place on the second floor with a neon sign that said "Lincoln Tap Room" and I to said to Mom, when I get older I'm going to study tap dancing there. She just smiled.

There - that Tap Room is a good example. Ham radio operators play an important role during disasters like this big fire, connecting people to loved ones waiting to hear when other means fail.

We forget about radio. Your aunt reminds me of June's much married aunt who
scanned her husband's funeral looking for the next candidate. Or the woman
who invited widowers to breakfast the week after their wife died.
We are watching the fires.

Auntie Lorna was only married the once, to a cattle rancher, and he embroidered pillow cases after retiring from ranching. He's the uncle to my 65-year old cowboy cousin who recently taught himself how to tat via YouTube.

Sometimes the craziest relatives bring a lot of laughs--intended or not!

I never met this woman until many years after my mother died, and she's a treasure to me. She's not really related to me, though, so I can afford to be charmed by her. My cousins who ARE related to her think she's a busybody.

We will all be chuckling about this for a while.

I get such a kick out of it, because we can never look for these things on purpose, they have to come along on their own.
reply by troutbend on June 18, 2012 7:00 PM ()
that is so funny.

And there it sits, and every time I go by, I'm going to be sorry it just radios.

Don't mention the Ham Shake to your auntie-in-law.

She is the one who has planted petunias in several discarded refrigerator crisper drawers around her front yard. It looks tacky, and then when the flowers bloom, it looks kind of charming, but I'm not going to do it myself.
