Jaywalking

Mr. Troutbend is back in Las Vegas, staying at the Rio for three nights, and crossing the street to the Gold Coast.

The Rio is the three-armed shaped on the right, and the Gold Coast's parking garage is that gray rectangle between the Rio and the white roof of the Gold Coast.

It's a longer walk to go down to the corner at Flamingo Road to use the crosswalk, so most people jaywalk across that street about where those arrows are painted on the lanes.

Cars come racing around the corner, and it's such a wide street, it can be very dangerous. A few weeks ago, a couple in their 70s from Tennessee or Kentucky or somewhere like that were jaywalking and got mowed down by a hit-and-run driver - yet to be found.

Mr. Troutbend tells me:

"There are some interesting spray painted lines, circles, and squares – color-coded and most with accompanying text – on the pavement on southbound Valley View here by the Gold Coast. “PED FM”, PED M”, “BRACELET”, “EARRING”, “SHOE LT”, “SHOE R”, “TOOTH”, “AIC”, “VENT”, “VEH PART”, etc. I get a good look at them as I jaywalk past."

And today: "Another marking in the street I noticed is “CARDS”. Wonder if that would be slot cards."

no real problem on our island, but people do stupid things. In Queens, NY, jaywalking was killing seniors crossing Queens blvd. on a regular basis. Cars using this main artery to get to the city were oblivious. They erected an iron fence down the middle of the median. It made shopping very tedious as, to get across to a store, you had to walk three blocks to a crosswalk. I once just climbed over the fence. Down here, bikers get routinely killed, and kids crossing main roads at 2 a.m. also wind up dead.

Seems like the pedestrian deaths in Las Vegas have slowed down lately, or maybe my eye is just sliding over the headlines without registering.

Here's more about the color coding: "The lettering is about 8 inches tall, big enough that I could read most of it from the top of the parking garage.  All of the personal effects were marked in green, the car parts in yellow, and the track of the car in red (one wheel was up on the sidewalk for a ways after impact).  I could just about “see” the incident by looking at all that.  There are also 2 half circles with arrows that I assume marked the head positions."

Eek. Be careful sir! Vegas isn't a place if want to jaywalk...

I'm always telling him not to do it.
A pedestrian is hit and usually killed at least three times a week in Las Vegas. And the cops have no sympathy for the jaywalkers, as is their right.

Take care dear Mr. Troutbend. I can just imagine the drunk drivers.

Reading the Las Vegas news, you get the feeling that most of the drivers are under the influence of something just about any hour of the day. Even the sidewalks and bus stops are not safe for pedestrians - many people have been run down by cars and not even very close to the street.

Those are mysterious things to read on the street. Secret messages? Anyway, I hope he stops jaywalking, I can imagine how reckless the drivers must be.

It was the markings to show where the deceased and their belongings ended up, the direction the car went, and so on - see my comment just posted as to what the color coding was.

TUT TUT !!!!! jaywalking a no no $200 fine here if not using pedestrian crossing lights .

The jaywalkers are bad enough, and cars are supposed to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, but they ignore them and plow them down. The cops dress up in turkey and santa claus outfits during the holidays and go stand by the crosswalks, and still the drivers breeze right past them.

They are doing some 'fancy' 'crazy' markings on the corners of streets in Fort Lauderdale hoping to slow traffic!!

There is a fine line between attempts to slow down traffic and adding more distraction for the drivers.
