Those Gloves

Because my access road and driveway are still flood damaged, I park my truck in a grassy spot on the edge of my property.

The other day I saw a pair of my wool gloves mashed down into the grass and all sandy from being run over many times. I must have dropped them two or three months ago and didn't realize it. One of them was frozen to the ground, and it would tear it if I tried to rip it free. Today I took a jar of hot water over there and poured on it, and it came loose. Now they are soaking in water to get the sand out.

We saw the fox tonight after dark. It sure looks like the one that was here in daylight the other day, so I don't know why it's acting so spooked unless it's still scared of the cat. If you ask her about it, that fox should be scared because any chance she gets, she'll run him off again. Right this minute she's staring out the window into the back yard where he was last seen.

More of the river ice melts every day, and brings us closer to fishing season and clean up day when the fishermen and some boy scouts are coming to help clean debris out of the river and along the banks. The hydrologist said some of the natural debris - tree branches and grasses - is good because it slows down the flood waters. But we need to sort out the bits of houses, clothing, and pieces of metal that are mixed in there.

Before clean up day, there are a number of things I need to get done, so I'm making my lists. I can't start doing them until the road work is done. I'm excited because 6 loads of dirt were delivered today, so we might be only a week or two away. But I've said that five or six times over the past three months, so it probably jinxes it to even think about it getting done.

Is baking goodies on your list? We know how you always spoil the workers that come around.

Still a lot on your plate. Re. Gary, did the doctors know what went wrong? Dizzy is the worst. Kisses to Eloise and the fox (you can blow him a kiss for me).

All the doctors found was a chronic sinus infection. Apparently this dizziness and nausea can be caused by that. He finished the antibiotics, but still struggles with dizziness just about every day. It sounds like he's gradually getting better, but he's disappointed when he has a set-back. I sent him an article about breathing in steam and putting hot moist washcloths on his face, and he's been doing that.

You live in such a beautiful place.

It really is. When there was deep snow on the ground, it was easier to remember the beauty of it. Now that it's mostly melted, the flood damage is apparent and I have to keep reminding myself that in time it will be something to be proud of again. I suppose the silver lining is that it may look like The Clampetts live here, but so does everywhere else in the area.

What are the predictions for more floods when the snow melts???
comment by greatmartin on Feb 28, 2014 7:18 AM ()
The experts are talking about a 10- to 25-year flood event this spring, starting in late May through June because the snowpack in the mountains is 150% of normal, and we haven't entered the snowiest months of March and April. I say bring it on and get it over with, but easy for me to say, because I have my plans in place for preparation before the high water comes, and I'll be ready. A lot of people have quite a bit more to do to get ready and are impeded by government red tape.

Those poor gloves. I'm glad I found them sooner than later.

How is Gary? I hope he is well enough that you don't have to make a flying
trip to Las Vegas.

He says he's a little less dizzy every day, but the fact remains he's still dizzy. And those blackouts seem to have come without notice. I'm watching the Las Vegas news for stories about cars plowing into the fronts of businesses because the driver has had a medical episode - could be him. When I think about going there to be supportive, I realize it would be a wasted trip - I'll get there, he'll say he's okay for the most part, I'll nag at him to go to the doctor, he'll refuse, we'll sit there and look at each other in silence, and I'll come back.

to you, and some hugs.
