Garden Dreams

The weeks are slipping away, and it's not too soon to think about what seeds to start indoors. We don't get a lot of sunlight here in the house because of being down in a river canyon and surrounded by trees, so seeds planted indoors are slower to grow than in a sunny window in Las Vegas, for example. Our last frost date is Memorial Day, but I have water wall things to protect plants like tomatoes if they are planted out earlier.

My raised bed garden has electric heating tapes under the dirt, so I will have warm soil as soon as I want. Just imagine the electric meter cranking around on a 30 degree day while that tape tries to maintain 70 degrees.

I considered buying a portable cover for the plants, a frame with plastic walls that would set down over a row of vegetables but decided we should try to make our own rather than spending all that money.

I've got most of my seeds, but forgot to buy zucchini seed. I'll have to see what's left from last year.

Last summer we didn't get the raised bed garden done until late, so I just tossed a bunch of seeds in there experimentally without much planning. I hope this year I don't over plan it and then be disappointed in something. It's better to be laid back and enjoy what comes.

The thought of planting eager little seeds in spring sets my heart aflutter, as I look out at snow piles nearly as tall as I am....

There is always so much potential and hope in those seeds. I wish I had started gardening 10 years ago so I would have more years of it to look forward to.

my dad would start seeds indoor with a light over them, gave them light and warmth. best of luck!

I'm thinking I need to provide extra light for these seeds, will have to rig something up. Thanks for the idea.

That will be fun. I had all the cucumbers, mint, dill and peppers and
tomatoes from just two or less plants last year. My favorite tomato is
early girl.

Even my mint died, and that takes some doing.

I had a victory garden in the local park in Chicago during WWII. Nothing I planted grew except radishes. Other gardeners (adults) did much better than me. Later, I killed plants indoors. It's a gift.

I haven't had much luck with radishes for some reason - must be the climate up here - so we're even.

I can just see LauraAppleseed walking around throwing seeds wherever and blossoms appearing all over as if planned!

Oh, sure. I agonize over every planting: enough light? how will it get water? That hollyhock blossom took 3 years to accomplish. Pathetic.
