Fruit Flies

Our local TV station had a little segment about how to control fruit flies in your home. They said the flies get worse in October because it's harvest season, and there is more fruit around. I compost vegetable scraps so I have them around quite a bit all summer. I was glad to find out that I'm not alone in being aggravated by the little pests being around.

You can buy commercial traps.

But it's so easy to make your own.

Wine Bottle

Set an almost empty wine bottle with an inch of wine still in it on your counter. They will fly in there and not be able to get out.

Fruit Jar

Put a little vinegar - any kind but white wine vinegar - in the bottom of a small canning jar (the kind with the ring). Put a little piece of fruit in there. Cover the top with plastic wrap and screw on the jar ring. Poke a bunch of holes in the plastic. You can add a couple drops of dish soap and it'll make sure the flies stay in there.

I'd never realized this, but it makes sense: fruit flies breed like crazy in your drains. If you don't believe it (and to keep them in), cover the opening of your garbage disposal with duct tape. When you pull it off, there will be fruit flies stuck to it. Or you could keep that little lid on it. And run the garbage disposal frequently.

To clean out your drains: pour in some baking soda followed by boiling water with some vinegar in it. It'll foam up.

For other ideas, just google 'Fruit Fly Trap' and there is a bunch out there.

Here is one of them. Those little containers sitting on a lid from a deli container are film containers. With digital cameras, not everyone is going to have those on hand, but I'm sure you'll think of something.

I was just swatting them whenever I saw one sitting down, but I'm going to make one of these traps.

I heard about the vinegar/dish soap method this summer. I used cider vinegar with a little water and a drop of dish soap in a flat bowl. The fruit flies think it is a swimming pool until it is too late.

When this bit of wine has done its job, then I'll do the vinegar and soap.

I've been using the wine trap for about 2 decades. I first discovered that remedy when one night when I left my glass of wine on the counter with some wine still in it. In the morning, the inside had a bunch of those nagging fruit flies in there. I placed a saucer on top the glass to trap them in there so they would drown in their own intoxication. I've used the wine trap method ever since. If you let the wine ferment a little, that works better than fresh wine, fyi.

Oh, good, because I've got an open bottle of wine, so I'll drink off all but the last bit and leave it out overnight. Thx.

Do not have him here.It is too cold for them

Well, that's something. It seems like they were worse here this year, maybe because it was a warmer summer.

How interesting! I also use Terro for ants, I didn't know they made a contraption for fruit flies.

Look at all those flies buzzing around that thing in the picture. I'd be frantic if I had that many.

I used vinegar/baking soda/boiling water in series, one at a time, on my double kitchen sink. It only eased the back-up a bit and now, a month later, it's worse than ever. I'd have to do it every day for a week or more, I think. I've been too busy. I don't even use the dispose-all for anything more than small scrapings on dinner plates (ort, according to the crossword puzzle makers) and put any larger items in the garbage. It's old plumbing. I'll try the wine thing on ants/fruit flies. I have ants, but can't say I've seen any fruit flies. I'll try the duct tape test. Whatcha learn on this blog is amazine.

There is a commercial product that is supposed to clean the gunk out more gently than those emergency drain cleaners. It might be worth a try at your house.

PS You don't need the boiling water--just vinegar and baking soda will get the same results!

Sounds like it would work.

I use the liquid Terro to get rid of any ants and it works in seconds--a few drops where/when ever you see ants and they are goners!

That's right, I forgot about ants. Talk about out of sight out of mind, I don't even think of them until I have some. I'll keep that product in mind.
