Out the Front Window

The other morning at 3:38 a.m. I was reading in bed and heard some kind of large truck on the street in front of the house. What could it be? Looking out the front bedroom window I could see some kind of truck and wondered if it was one of those flat-bed tow trucks come to repossess one of the neighbors' cars. Anything's possible in this economy.

But turned out it was a city truck and they were there to replace a burned out street light. It took just a few minutes to get up the pole via cherry picker and screw in the new bulb. I pictured them patrolling the streets looking for darkness while most of us are sleeping.

Then, the next morning, I heard choppers overhead. We still don't know what that was about, but a TV helicopter hovered over our street for 20 minutes.

I was glad the chopper got my attention, though, because the sunrise was just beautiful.

I kept going back to look at it, and the helicopter, of course.

When we were going to move here I was looking forward to seeing the daybreak and dusk fall on the surrounding hills, but the houses are so close together we really can't see very far. But once in awhile we are lucky and get a good view.

Dawn is beautiful and the morning is my best time.

At my other house we're down in that valley so don't get much view of the sun coming up or going down. I miss it a lot, but I can get on the Internet and use the airport camera to get an idea.

And even more dramatic with the continuous whap-whap-whap of choppers!

In Long Beach almost every night we had police choppers flying circles overhead with their huge spotlights scanning the streets and back lawns. It was bothersome if you were trying to sleep, but that is how they chased down criminals. You just can't escape a helicopter with a million candlepower spotlight and police cars swarming under it.

Our first house when we got married was near a federal prison. Seemed like the choppers were around a lot, and I hate to think there were that many escapes.

Wow! Nice sunrise. I have taken a vow to never be awake at sunrise.

That chopper noise forced me to get up, otherwise, I'd have totally missed it.

Maybe the helis were looking for more burned out bulbs. Great sunset. I have a couple of pix like that -- but usually the sky shows come after hurricanes and severe storms so we haven't had any really spectacular displays in a while.

We get good ones when there's been a volcanic eruption somewhere in the world.
