New Friend

This morning I heard this funny quacking noise from the river and asked Mr. TroutBend if that was the ducks we see sometimes. "No, it's a goose."

A domestic goose came walking down our driveway this morning, across the bridge and into our hearts.

It doesn't really honk, sounds more like a quack, and in sometimes makes little fussy noises.

I call it a he; he is very friendly and loves to be around people. We can pet his head and pick him up. I posted this picture at the post office in case someone lost him.

He stayed around with the roofers for awhile, not bothered by the noise, and then he went fishing with the neighbors, stayed with them for hours.

It was fun watching him deal with the river current.

Later we all went for a stroll along the fishing trail.

I called a neighbor who has ducks and geese, and she said if nobody claims our friend, she will take him in. Meanwhile, we don't want our other friend the fox to eat our new friend, so he is in the closed garage with a box of grass clippings and a big dish of water, and shitting like crazy. He's not very happy about it, but we don't know what else to do.

We have Canada geese everywhere, pooping. They are very protective of their babies and will chase people, pecking at their feet.

This goose is so nice. When he is in the mood, I can tuck him under my arm and carry him around, and he never hisses or threatens. He is a good watchdog - doesn't honk at us, but lets us know when strangers come in the yard. The pooping is really something, but it varies in consistency and some of it is just ground up grass that quickly disintegrates with a hose spray.

Your goose and our cats could have a poop-off. I'm rooting for the cats.

You think the cats would win? The goose squirts 2 or 3 times an hour, wherever he is. I'm guessing at the frequency, haven't timed it. Of course, if I had as many geese as you have cats, I might be at the end of my rope.

Hosed it out first thing this morning, and it needed it.

All I ever find in my yard are dead birds. No, not Angel's doing. The silly things fly into my windows and break their necks. I'm not even going to ask who gets to clean the garage.

We keep our wood blinds down with the slats open so we can see the outdoors, but the birds know it's a solid surface. We have gotten used to seeing through the slits, but I'm sure guests think we are strange for shutting out the views.

Would putting decals on your windows help the birds to know they can't fly through? Our sliders have decals (put there by former owners).

Your reply is above.

I was going to say I hope that no one kills this friendly little guy! Very cool that you have a taker. I love stories like this, THANKS for sharing!

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get him to the new home without a lot of poop in the car. I'm thinking of holding onto him in the back of the pickup. It's only 5 miles.

I guess we have all agreed that while geese are lovely, they do have one
fatal flaw. Get him some corn next time you go to town.

The roofers were all charmed by him this morning, but now that he's feeling more at home, it's flying, and they aren't quite as thrilled. We have tried to move him to other parts of the yard, but the goose thinks that Jason the Roofer can't do a good job without supervision.

If I were a goose, I'd pick your happy home, too.

It's an honor to get to know this goose, I never knew they'd be so nice. I'll never forget him, and he will be over by our post office, so I could go say hello.

Since we are cat-less, it is a nice distraction.

That's what geese do--poop! Now aren't I a big help!?!

He's definitely a goose, then. The roofer said 'he must be feeling better, he's pooping everywhere.' and I said 'up until now I thought he was some kind of cat.'
