Flooding Update

We got through last night, and are waiting for the next go-round of heavy rain predicted for this afternoon, and 8 - 12 inches of snow in tonight's forecast. Looking outside right now, it's hard to believe that will come about, and sometimes the storms completely miss us.

This is Rabbit Creek, the tributary to our Big Thompson River at my house. In the 2013 flood Rabbit Creek destroyed the yard in front of my house, so it is a force to be reckoned with.

Last night, it was a couple of inches from those sand bags, and I worried all night that it would overflow into my yard.

This morning I discovered the stream channel moved 10 feet, leaving the sand bags high and dry.

Now, it's eating away at the big sand bank left by the 2013 flood. It built up during that previous flood because the water flow was slowed by debris downstream.

This is a good thing to have nature clean out that channel, as long as it doesn't start eroding the historical bank. I think it will be okay because there were big boulders placed there in 1976 after another big flood.

That's scary. Some people here had a muddy hill sliding towards their houses, and I thought of your area and how the water just changes your landscape there. Hope by now it's receded some.

We got through it, and that huge landslide downstream from us (thank goodness it's downstream) didn't appear to change during those rains. When I wrote this, I hadn't noticed the big pile of sand and rocks that filled a big part of the main river - it will take years for it to approximate what we consider normal for good fishing, and we might give it a nudge with some heavy equipment.

No real safe place to life--high wind, fire, flood, tornado.... Maybe a deserted island with some elevation....

I'm trying to think of the perfect mix of weather for me, and then figure out where that would be.

I went out this morning and the weather seemed as unstable as it has
all week. I was looking for an improvement. Hope the stream stays
diverted and Rabbit Creek does not eat away at your bridge.

The more we look at the post flood (2013 and a few weeks ago) conditions, the more we see the need for some dirt and rock work with heavy equipment. I am making plans for when CDOT is working on the highway.

Some crazy weather out your way. I hope nothing major happens. Stay safe.

I'm glad we don't live in Texas.
