Fire near Here

Here is a map of the 7000 acre fire burning north of here. It's not near enough to threaten my home, but conditions are right for us to get our own fire any time. So far, no homes have been burned down, but the winds are swirling around, and they can't predict where it will go. As of today it is 11% contained.

The yellow triangles represent homes.

We got just a smidgeon of rain last night.

I decided to take it day by day and not fret about it, but that's not easy to do.

I have been doing prairie/wetland/woodland restoration in local forest preserves for 23 years. As part of our work, we conduct controlled, prescribed burns. As a trained crew member, I am in awe of fire. It is like a living thing. That fire picture is amazing and scary. We had a big fire caused by a careless smoker throwing a cigarette butt into the grass by the side of a trail. The headfire from that just flew across the prairie grasses. It came very close to houses and took a long time to put out.

Some of the problem around here is with all the new houses built out in the woods they can't do prescribed burns. I always think about the question of why it takes so many matches to start a fire we want, and just one cigarette butt to start a wildfire.

so scary...

On one level, these scares are good because it motivates us to prepare in case we get our own fire. I don't think it will stop people from building new subdivisions in fire-prone areas, just like people rebuild their homes in flood zones.

It's going to be long, hot, and dry here. We'll take it day by day and welcome any rain that comes.

Just no way to escape the weather... floods here... tornadoes, hurricanes, fires and earthquakes everywhere else.

This fire was caused by a hiker - he was using an alcohol fueled camping stove and says the wind blew it over. At least he came forward and admitted it.

Luckily it poured down here past 2 days so everything is wet.

We are getting a good soaking rain today, and that will make a huge difference in fighting that fire.
