Daylight Raid

All summer our Facebook group has shared information about sightings of the mother bear and twin cubs. They visited here yesterday afternoon. We take the feeders in at night so as to not attract them, but it was a surprise to see them during the day.

Two feeders were over at the cabin next door, and they ripped a 2 foot hole in the screen on the porch. I'l have to stitch it shut so it's not flopping in the wind all winter.

I emailed the bear pictures to my cousin who was recently here with her five kids and another family that has seven kids came to visit. I think she was picturing the bears coming around when all 12 of those children were out in the yard.

Don't hate me but I feel sorry for the poor hungry bears!

We all feel sorry for the bears. A fed bear is a dead bear because feeding them teaches them to depend on people, and next thing you know, the inside of a car or house is torn up, or some person is mauled or killed. They can be trapped and relocated away from people, but that usually doesn't work and they find their way back, so Parks and Wildlife quite frequently kills the ones that come around the houses. That's why we do all we can to keep our people food away from them.

Would it be feasible to put some stuff out, away from the house, just for the bears?

Oh, my no! Very, very illegal to feed wildlife in Colorado. I could have gotten in big trouble for what I had going on with that fox a few years ago. Even parks and wildlife can't feed the bears in the lean years like this one - have to stick with survival of the fittest. I was talking to wildlife people about the fish that are trapped in our little side stream, disconnected from the river, whether there was anything we can do to transport them to a better environment, and he said no, it's nature, and maybe the bears will eat them, so that's a good thing.

It is scary. Hungry bears are a no no.

We're all nervous about it because the bears need 20,000 calories a day up until they go into hibernation in October, and there isn't much food in the canyon this year because of the unusual spring weather.

Wow. Living in nature for sure!!!
I think I would have been scared too...

It's startling to see the bears here during the day because we're more likely to be out in the yard somewhere. Earlier that day I was up hiking around on the larger part of the property, could easily have encountered them out in the wild. Now, THAT!!!

What creeped me out the most was they retreated to the back edge of the yard and sat there watching the door of the house as if they expected me to come out and refill the bird feeders so they could come back. Meanwhile the four remaining hummingbirds were so upset to have lost their food source, flying frantically around the feeder. It was a rock and a hard place for me, and I expected the bears to return any minute after I took care of the birds.

You were on the other side of that big, breakable window, huh? This was a brave photo. I'd be cowering under a chair.
