The first thing I do every morning, computer-wise at least, is look at my local newspapers online. One of the articles this morning is how we shouldn't blame the county clerk for all the political phone calls we're getting at home. It warns us that the updated list of voter registrations will be downloaded on Friday, and the calls will increase after that.
I'm registered as an Independent, and both parties naturally want to woo me in their direction. All of the calls I have been getting are from the Republican party. I don't pick up when I see the number is from Washington DC, and there is another one that shows as "Opinion Poll" on the Caller ID. I look up the numbers on a website that identifies these callers.
In the last couple of major elections, Colorado has been considered a key state, and now I find out my particular county is also important:
"In a closely contested swing state, Larimer is the swing county -- just as it was in the last presidential election when a high-profile national Republican strategist singled out the county as a bellwether.
Barack Obama out-polled Sen. John McCain in the 2008 election, winning 54 percent of the Larimer County vote.
"Karl Rove said, 'Watch how Larimer County votes, because that's how the country goes,'"
It's frightening to me that Karl Rove had even heard of us because I would just as soon stay off the radar of scum like him. This is not a slam on the Republicans, it's just about Karl Rove.
Another thing I don't like is that hired guns have been brought here to mine our personal data and try to convince us to vote their way: the Romney Colorado spokesman is a resident of Tennessee. I guess they couldn't find a suitable local Republican for the job, although I'm sure some of them would appreciate the work.
According to the county clerk, the way to stop the calls is to vote. Our ballots will be in the mail on October 15, and as soon as we get them returned, this information will be relayed to the campaign offices, and they will stop pestering us.
Meanwhile, here at the ranch:
