For the Birds

I should have taken more pictures. The bushes along the river in front of the cabin next door had gotten so big you couldn't see the river from the front porch, so Mr. Troutbend trimmed them off yesterday and then he shredded the branches in the wood chipper and put the mulch along the riverbank where the soil needs enriching.

Quackers loves noisy operations, but we were worried about his ears, so put him in the garage during the shredding operation.

After he was outside again, he stayed around the wheelbarrow until we gave him a ride in it. We all thought it was great fun.

The male hairy woodpecker was here. A few days ago it was the female who came visiting.

I know you wonder what the fox is up to. He was here yesterday morning, and Quackers was out front carrying on about something. The fox's ears didn't even twitch; I think he is immune to the goose. A good thing, but we're not taking any chances, and that other fox sometimes comes around during the day.

I hope Quackers realizes we are not abandoning him and we still love him. Hopefully he'll be excited about his new home with other poultry.

The news about Quackers has made me happy, and all the photos of him. I lost my bird a few days ago. He was almost 12, I think. Strange how such a small creature had such a big presence in the house.

I am so sorry to hear your bird is gone, and I know you miss him a lot. I was thinking about the two of you just the other day, knowing that you would understand how Quackers has such a big place in our lives.

Geese are loveable and affectionate. I cracked up watching quackers ride
in the wheelbarrow.

We did it again today, toured the back yard, and when he saw something interesting, he hopped out. Now, on top of taking him for a dip in the river, we try to think of noisy work projects involving the wheelbarrow just to entertain the goose.

If I can't have any alpacas, I want a goose. Do you think Angel would mind?
comment by nittineedles on July 17, 2012 5:52 PM ()
I think Angel would be fine with it, and it's revenge for the noisy dogs next door because geese like to 'talk' in the morning.

I like Quackers and will be sad when he goes to his new home because we won't be getting updates. I hope that they are as nice to him as you are!

It will be different for him because he won't be the center of the universe at the new home, there are several other animals and birds. On the other hand, there is another goose like him, so he'll have company of his own kind (I hope they get along).

We've grown attached to Quackers. He greeted us with a round of honking after we arrived and everyone else had gone into the house.
comment by jerms on July 17, 2012 5:16 PM ()
He's been quieter around you than previous guests, I think that means he likes you.
reply by troutbend on July 17, 2012 6:12 PM ()
That Quackers is such a character.

He's always showing us new sides of his personality. I think he's more fun than a cat.

I loved the photo there.

We were surprised he wanted to ride like that.

I miss my birds!!!! At least I still have the hundreds of (very noisy) wild parrots stopping by the tree outside my window every afternoon!
There is also a blue jay family in that tree but I can't get a picture of them!

Now I can better understand how people can get attached to birds.
