Bear Season

Bears have been active at my nearest neighbors' house, but so far not at mine. They are getting ready for hibernation, searching out sources of food, and this includes breaking into houses, sheds, and cars.

The weather is expected to be warm for several weeks, so the bears are not likely to go into hibernation soon.

This is what our main highway looks like to the east of me. The highway department is digging out the riverbanks to put in reinforcing riprap and hopefully protect the highway from washing out in big flood events. This part of it should be completed by March 2018.

North Florida has a big (no pun intended) problem with bears--they are now selling garbage bins that bears can't get into!!

Those bear-resistant trash bins are expensive - two or three hundred dollars. The people who have them in my area talk about how the bears have figured out how to bend the lids open, or if they stay shut, they thrown them down the mountain to try to crack them open.

Besides my Oh my god reaction to what bears did to that house, I'm confused, didn't you just have snow -- but now it's warm? Does that mean you have more time to put bars on your windows? Or maybe get a bunch more cats to patrol the yard. From what I see on Youtube they are braver than most other animals.

It has warmed up to the high 60s/70s most days. Just this morning there was an article in the local paper about why this fall has been so toasty - we are in a transition period where high pressure keeps the weather warm and about once a week a low front brings chillier weather.

My cat has the fox terrorized, but probably not the bears.
