Aunt Laura

Today I was thinking about the last time I visited my Aunt Laura. She lives in southeastern Utah, practically on the Colorado border.

This is her trading post:

It is a little oasis in the desert. They have never had phone service, not even cell phones, and their electricity comes from a generator.

Every time I went there, Aunt Laura would hustle me into the pickup and drive me around to see Anasazi ruins and pretty scenery in the immediate area.

I send Christmas cards to her, but she never responds. She has always been cranky and defensive because her parents didn't approve that she married Sherman the Mormon, even though he gave up his faith and claimed to really dislike the Mormons. I think she's one of those people who always have something to be angry about, so if it's not one thing, it's another.

So are you planning a visit? It's beautiful out there but I am also wondering how she sustains herself without a phone at least. She lives alone? She needs Life Alert.

I heard through the family grapevine that she might have moved to town to live with one of her sons, but I don't which town. None of her kids was interested in inheriting the family business.

It makes her feel better to complain. Go ahead. Ask me how I know.

At least she didn't return my letters unopened like she did to some people.

Maybe if she is so easily or habitually bothered by things, such seclusion suits her. Nice that she could find an isolated place to be at home. Now my foodie soul is wondering where she get her food supplies....

She had a big garden and canned a lot of fruit and vegetables, plus they raised and processed their own meat.

How much business does she get away out there in the middle of nowhere?

There's a few tourists and slick rock bicycle riders driving through that area. Last time we were there she was saying that people would stop, come in, (see how uninteresting it was in that store), and ask what kind of tree that was across the road. (Globe willow.) But they seldom bought anything. It was different when the roads weren't paved and cars didn't have air conditioning - they'd stagger up to that oasis after miles of bad, bad road and be grateful for a cold beverage and a candy bar.

The place reminds me of the front of the Alamo.

Yes, it does. They always prided themselves on how they kept things up, compared to my grandparents' and uncles' trading post in that same area.

The older I get, the crankier I am. I would really be cranky if I was
as isolated as Aunt Laura.

Yes, I know that cranky feeling, too. She was so pretty when she was young, I hope she had some good times in her life.

And she is happy that way! I know from having a mother like that-- the more she could complain about the happier she was!
comment by greatmartin on Apr 26, 2013 8:30 PM ()
That could be. I'd like to think she's happy.
