Camping in Wyoming

Here's a summer picture of my dad and his siblings with his dad cooking - camping in Wyoming in the early 1930s.

The writing is my dad's. When talking about the picture he said: "Well of course Eleanor (the oldest girl) was the biggest one, and she took up the most room in the back seat."

I love them. Linda decided she really does want the pictures and I am so glad.

I ended up with a lot of the old family photos from all parts of my family, have about 10 bankers boxes full, organized by family in big envelopes. It's been a way to meet distant relatives because they come here and want to scan them, and sometimes they send me pictures to identify, so I get to see ones that I didn't have.

I think about what all it took to develop the photographs before digital cameras, and it makes the old pictures even more precious.

These photos are treasures! One the website my paternal family created, there are several wonderful images like this of our grandparents at their small summer cottage on the Canadian edge of Lake Erie. Snapshots of their younger lives I delight in seeing, some 30-plus years before I was born.

I often think about how the digital pictures we use today will be lost when the person who had access to them dies. And as the technology changes, the ones stored on floppy disks or CDs or DVDs won't be accessible. Thumb drives are handy little things, but I don't entirely trust them not to fail.
