As to people, the foxes set boundaries, and it's mutual - neither side wants the other too close.

They don't seem to mess with dogs or cats - too much trouble. Plus foxes don't weigh very much. My cat used to chase the fox up the side of the hill and they would sit up there. When the cat came in the house the fox would sit in the yard and bark. I worried that it might feel cornered and turn on her, but that never happened. They probably carry rabies.
