The 2021 Bear

One recent afternoon I glanced out the kitchen window and a medium-sized bear was rolling around in the backyard clover patch. It was having a great time, either eating insects or clover, got up and did a yoga stretch, and started toward our house where there were hummingbird feeders. We ran out and shooed it away and so far it hasn't been back that we know of.

I love your wild animal adventures! My favorite has to be some years ago with the fox which kept visiting. That was such a delight!

So they do eat clover among other things. Just like my groundhogs. (I would be a little scared just going outside to shoo it away.)

Bears are omnivores, eat grasses, insects, etc. in addition to meat. I always worry that they won't get their 20,000 calories a day when getting ready for winter eating vegetation, but of course I'd never try to help them out with some dog food because next they'd be expecting it and get demanding.

Bears are in general afraid of people unless they've had a lot of success getting people food, and then they might get persistent and not run off when we yell. Mountain lions are another story because they will sneak up on us and attack.

Over the years there's been a lot of educational outreach about how bad it is to feed the wildlife so now we try not to, but I miss seeing that fox. At least the foxes don't break into our houses and cars like the bears do.

The hummingbirds are a welcome diversion, and now they're mostly gone south. I'll miss them a lot.

Oh let him have a little snack!!! He might get even for your rudeness by going for a human snack!!!

I felt sorry for him because he looked so puzzled that we yelled at him. Stood on the edge of the yard and shook his head. A young bear, give him a year and he'll be pushier, maybe thinking of revenge.
