Windex Your Carpet

This morning started out kind of gnarly. Right off, first visit to the bathroom, and the toilet seat mooring bolts broke and the seat was slipping and sliding. I Gorilla Glued them together a couple of years ago and it lasted well, but its demise wasn't unexpected. On my to-do list: "Get new toilet seat."

Then I started to shampoo the bedroom carpet, and the old machine clanked and sputtered and the motor burned out. That wasn't unexpected either. Add to to-do list: "Get another rug shampoo-er."
I called Service Master and asked a gentleman who answered why can't you use dry cleaning fluid in rug cleaning machines? It doesn't make sense to put steam and moisture on a carpet with padding that has glue on it.

Mr. Service Master said dry cleaning fluid is flammable and the odor would be hard to remove. Besides dry cleaning fluid is expensive. I still think it's a good idea. Men have been on the moon, for Pete's sake. Why can't Oreck et al work on that?
Then he said dry powders are a bad idea. You can never get all the powder out. Spray on spot cleaners like Resolve etc. attract more dirt. Then he gave me a good tip. He suggested using Windex in the shampoo-er, because it has ammonia in it, and dries quickly. I got Valentina to come over with her shampoo-er and we tried it, and it seems to have worked fine.
She was leery of full strength Windex, and has a gallon resevoir on her machine, so she only used a cupful in a gallon of water. When I get my new machine, I'm gonna use lots more than a cupful.

Bye for now, from the domesticated helpful hints nerdy birdy.

Good tip, Sue. I'm going to order a small home cleaning steamer, I've heard such great things about them, but for carpets, I'll probably have to hire some service. I can't manage hauling in a carpet cleaning machine up three floors of stairs.

marta; Hauling some piece of equipment up stairs is a bummer--for me, it is almost impossible just to lug this small Bissell shampooer down the hall. I sit in a chair and use it, move the chair, do some more floor etc.
Valentina came to help and made a mess out of it--I shouldn't have asked. She sabotaged it.

Good idea. I put it in my steam mop instead of water and it sure helps the
tile.

Hi jeri; I have a new shampoo-er and will use it one day this week, with some Windex in the solution. I can see where it would well on tile!

We have a steamer we have never used. Ed wanted it. I wanted a pro to come in once a year. We started out to use it once, couldn't find the manual. Then we found the manual and couldn't find the steamer in the garage. God does not want us to have clean carpets. You heard it here.

I'm going to try that, Sue. I have a hard floor scrubber (like a vacuum with a water tank) and the directions say not to use solvent-based cleaners. I keep wondering what that is - Pine-Sol maybe. I have a feeling that bottle of stuff that came in the box contains Windex.

The directions on this new shampoo-er says not to use any products not approved by the company (meaning their own products of course) but I'm gonna try it anyway.
