Dr. Joe Campbell is chairman of anesthesiology at a local hospital, and also writes articles for the paper. His most recent was about his favorite TV show, BBC's "Top Gear."
He writes about Jeremy Clarkson, a presenter on the show, and some of the things he's said were delightfully funny.
Clarkson is an automobile reviewer for the London Times, and "has managed at one time or another to offend almost every group in Britain and every nation of earth."
From Jeremy Clarkson: He called British Prime Minister Gordon Brown "a one eyed Scottish idiot." (He later apologized for the comments about Brown's personal appearance.)
He described a car built in Malaysia as "the worst car in the world, built by people who wear leaves for shoes."
He once said the designer of a Hyundai "had probably eaten a spaniel for lunch."
About American cars he said "except for a few exceptions are pretty much junk, as we are too busy worrying about eating to care."
He once described the defunct British Leyland autos as the worst cars ever made, saying "never in the field of human endeavor has so much been done, so badly, by so many."
Of the Italians he said they are incapable of building anything that won't break after two laps around the track.
I watched a Top Gear show the other night, and Clarkson's sharp wit was evident, and I was surprised that he looked like the twin brother of Gordon Elliot--tall and rumpled. But it's a guy kind of show, so it's not my cup of tea, but may look in on it now and then, just to catch some of his witticisms.
