I Used to Be a Real Person

Yesterday morning I finally got to the bottom of the large plastic bin of loose photos and added them to the separated piles of photos on a table in my office--now I can begin the task of getting them into albums. There was a pleasant surprise at the bottom of the bin--my last work photo ID from FGH, stuck in a badge holder to which was pinned my gold five year pin, my pin for a course I took and passed to become an RNII, a United Way pin, and a Caduceus.

I also found my nurses cap, my original Mississippi nurses license and my Texas license, and RN name pins. You know what finding those items made me feel like? Like I had once been a real person. One of the first things anyone asks when they meet you is "What do you do?" Now I'm retired, but I used to be a real person, with responsibilities; respected and well known in this neck of the woods. These mementos are going into my safe deposit box--glad I found them.

You are a presence in all out lives, Sue. One of the reasons to feel at loss in retirement is letting your work define you. You are our voluptuous
Southern charmer and a good writer.

Hi jeri; I think maybe most people let their jobs define them--I've had people say to me "didn't you used to be a nurse?" Well, I still am, just retired now, but it's a letdown to be a "used to be."
Thanks for your kind words, but it's embarrassing...

We stay real, Su, just in a different way. As for the way the world sees us, I must admit I keep mementos around (my New York Times ID badge for one) that if people take a close look at the tray, they will notice. Ed used to have a staff to do his office work and he says, "I used to be a real person." But I think being real is what you make it every day and screw the world's perception. You're real to me.

Hi teal, I think the worst thing a person can do is retire--really, a person should work until they fall dead on the job! Retirement is not a good thing, esp. if you haven't got some fulfilling reason to get up every morning.

I know what you mean, Sue, about being that someone. Retirement is a big change and people we meet away from our former jobs are going to see us in a whole different way.
