Ran

Caught part of a famous movie "Ran" on Sundance Channel the other night. This movie is a Japanese version of King Lear, with sub-titles. A old war lord divided his kingdom up between his three sons, intending to spend his time visiting between the three.
But the selfish ambitious sons go to war with each other to claim the entire kingdom. When the old war lord shows up at one son's castle, he is rebuffed and leaves broken hearted. There is one scene, where having lost his mind, he sits cross legged in a tower surrounded by men killed in battle, and women who have killed themselves. As flying fire tipped arrows and gunshots whiz past his head, he remains unharmed.
Fire drives him from the burning tower.

He emerges from thick smoke like a wraith, walking down a long flight of stairs. Below are two armies, ready for battle. They see the old man with his white robe flying and his long white hair undone, whipped by the wind, face ashen, looking like some supernatural ghostly vision, and the armies separate and let him pass unharmed.

In another scene, one brother kills another and takes over his castle. He is seduced by his brother's wife, sly and desperate, fearful of her own future. Another scene: a boy blinded by the old war lord, living alone in a hut, unwillingly takes the old man in as he is pursued. Many powerful scenes, and some beautiful scenery--and I liked the sound track like crickets and birds while the old war lord, abandoned by his sons, sits in a desert.

Great movie making. susil
