Deep South News

This is some of what's going on in the Magnolia State; far down toward the tail end of the state, deep in the guts of Mississippi. (If I compared where I live in the state to the human body, I'd be down in the bodily excretion end of it if you get my drift.)
Let's see: Gov Barbour attacked suggestions that politics rather than merit put Flora Miss. among six national finalists vying for the chance to host a federal biological research lab. Host--oh yeah. That's just what our beleaguered state needs: a yahoo state administration who thinks having one of the most dangerous facilities on Earth moved from Plum Island New York to the bucolic Mississippi countryside would be just wonderful. Idiots.
Big news recently about hazing at a sorority house at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Two students were hospitalized for alcohol poisoning, one still in ICU. Authorities closed the sorority house and say those responsible will be prosecuted.
Also big news about the largest raid on a business in the US, when Howard Industries, which makes electrical components was raided by ICE agents (immigration officers) and 500 suspected illegals were arrested and hauled out in handcuffs. Lots of fake documents and such discovered.  Lots of fallout in the community.
Well, I emailed in my first article to the editor of the paper, and he emailed back that it wasn't long enough, so he used it as a letter to the editor instead. Now I've got to write another article, and it will be about trees and the environment again. The first one was about the coroner system in Mississippi. ANYONE over 18 with a high school diploma (new requirement) can be elected coroner. It's ridiculous.
A physician, RN, LPN, even a paramedic should be coroner/medical examiner. Five days at coroner school (8 hours a day for five days) does not qualify a lay person off the street to make determinations about cause of death and sign death certificates. If you want to commit murder, come to Mississippi--everybody knows that saying. It's appalling that there are no pre-qualifications whatever for the critical office of coroner.      Enough for now, bye y'all, susil

The coroner in Amarillo, Texas where my dad had his airplane accident was a Justice of the Peace. She had never had to deal with a small plane accident and I think it was a real shock to her, but she was very supportive and nice to us. There was an autopsy performed to determine whether there was anything detectable that could have caused the accident, but it was just a formality - they knew he didn't see the power plant in the fog and just accidentally flew into it. I think he was probably proud of himself for flying right between two big smoke stacks, no doubt the last thought he ever had.

The coroner in Wayne works in a funeral home. How is
that for convenience?

Those last two paragraphs are quite scary.
