Early last Saturday morning cousin Ellie phoned and said some people had set up a large yard sale 15 miles away, next to highway 98. She said you need to go check it out--they have a lot of nice things!
I wasn't feeling well that morning and didn't want to get out. But a couple of hours later she phoned again and said You really need to check out that sale! So I figured if she called twice maybe I should check it out. I reluctantly dressed and washed and combed and drove to the sale. By then it was 1:30pm. It was hot and sunny, in the 80's. Children were running around tired and restless, the vendors were sunburned and ready to pack it up and go home.
But as I drove up, right there out front, visible to the east/west/north/south highway intersection where anyone could have seen it and scooped it up, sat a curio cabinet made to fit in a corner. I've been looking for YEARS, years I tell you, for that cabinet. Just the right size and height, made of sanded pine with a soft beautiful finish, and Tiffany like glass panes; the design shows pink tulip buds nestled in a "V" of green leaves, and what I assume is faux leading on the glass surrounding the tulip design. Just beautiful. There was a piece of paper taped to it, fluttering in the breeze.
Heart in throat, I asked the seller if the paper meant "sold" and someone else had dibs on it. Nope, unsold. It's mine then, I said and paid then and there, just as another woman drove up and said what a beautiful piece of furniture! And I said, Sure is I said; I just bought it! I called cousin Bubba to bring his pickup to the sale. Meanwhile, I looked at a table full of really nice clay/ceramic pieces, vases, with magnolias painted on them, and a collection of hummingbird plates and hummingbird bookends with the birds fluttering over morning glories, and a plus--one bookend was a music box that played "The Way We Were." Of course I bought those and a bunch of the vases and plates.
The seller was ready to pack up, and marked everything way down.
Bubba arrived and took my cabinet home, I worried over every jounce in the road, but it was fine and he set it up for me in that corner that had been waiting for it, and helped me unpack and damp dust every piece and set it in the cabinet. So not only did I get that beautiful cabinet, but all the nice pieces that went into it. Sometimes you just have to be in the right place at the right time.
