I read a very interesting book review about Andre Agassi that was intriguing. He tells of drug use and hating tennis. From the review: Agassi reveals his struggle to reconcile his gift for striking balls, with a life foisted on him, and felt trapped by circumstances. Agassi was tough on his dad and his mother is described as distant. The book covers his relationship with his coach, beginning at age 13, of whom Agassi says "didn't have time to deal with a person like me. He wasn't for me." He comes across as a tortured soul, just now finding his own meaning and way in life. Bless his heart.
On another subject, my daughter phoned and she is concerned about some environmental issues in the nice subdivision in Texas they moved to a couple of years ago. She ran for office in her homeowner's enclave, but the contractor/builder told her she didn't have a chance and should settle for helping with the newsletter. Ah HA! That's fired her up. I'm so happy--I knew there was an environmentalist in her somewhere waiting to come out.Â
She recalled when she was a girl, me taking her along to Sierra Club meetings when a federal agency wanted to use the Richton salt domes to store nuclear waste. The Sierra Club is defunct here, but I hope she will join one in Texas so she can see there are others of her ilk in the world.
On another note, I heard on NPR yesterday that once prolific blue fin tuna have been fished to near extinction, and albatross who are caught in the fish nets are dying out too. Simply adding flags to the floats above the water is enough to scare off the albatross, but it isn't being done. Well then, stupid greedy human beings, seine the ocean of all fish, kill all the birds, pillage and pollute and destroy while we all sit on our thumbs and do nothing. When the end comes we will have well deserved it.
