The 4400

Back in 2007, the USA cable network aired a science fiction series called The 4400. I like a good sci-fi story-this series was about 4400 men and women (and one 8 year old girl) from all walks of life from all over the Earth, who suddenly vanished. The little girl had been on a picnic with her parents and went to pick wildflowers--she saw a light overhead and immediately disappeared. In another scene, a devoted couple approaching middle age are in their bedroom--he goes to the bathroom to brush his teeth, the light appears, and he vanishes.

Many years later, I think it was 30 or 40 years later, a huge bluish ball of light appears and hovers over a lake. As it fades from sight, there are the 4400 standing on the shore, looking exacly as they did when they disappeared. The bathroom man is desperate to find out where his wife is, and finds her in a nursing home. She is old and frail and wrinkly and trembly. He holds her hand and says to her don't you remember me? I'm your husband. She looks at the young man and says sadly My husband left me.. left me... He starts to cry and holds her close and says I'll never leave you again.

The music playing in the background of this scene is sung by Ivy, a woman with a soft voice, crooning the lyrics like a lullaby:

"Bye Bye baby don't be long
I worry about you
while you're gone

I think of you in my dreams
you never know
just what you mean to me...to me..

I think of you night and day
I never knew just what
you meant to say...to say..."

Now this is one of those songs I could never get out of my mind. After diligent search I found a music store who located a soundtrack of the 4400 and I picked it up yesterday. Track #5 is this song, and I've listened to it 100 times since I got it in my hand. It is a hauntingly beautiful piece of music.
