Memorial Day

In Flanders Fields
John McCrae, 1915.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I salute fellow veterans for their great sacrifice who endure, and seek solace as a result. And for all who will never grow gray to see the unfolding promises of youth nor never embrace their loving grandchildren.

My, I thought I had forgotten, but I remember a teacher reading us "Flanders Fields." I didn't know what it was about then. But as I recall she read, "In Flanders Fields where poppies grow" as the first line. It was long ago, and I'm probably remembering wrongly, especially since I don't even remember the first line right... and didn't know what it was about!

Wow! Have not read that poem in years! Thank you!
P.S.: The image of poppies in this poem inspired the "Poppy Drive" adopted by several veteran's groups, including the D.A.V.

We owe them so much. We owe them everything.

I think of that poem quite often. When I went to Arlington Cemetary, it came back with a "bang". I understand we have the second largest veteran's vemetary here in Houston. I have two friends who are buried there. For some reason my veteran Husband thought it was a "Cheap" way to bury them and he didn't want us to be buried there. I could not understand him as it is so beautiful and impressive out there. I give thanks for all who gave their life for my freedon and those who die every day. Wish we could bring all our young people home. Nena

Oh, Strider, you do have a way with words. My father used to recite that poem. He was a vet of World Wars I and II. I haven't thought about it in years.
