From my viewpoint here in the Philippines, I observe the behavior of my American countrymen as they battle their way through the 2008 Presidential election process. It is quite disturbing to me. It makes me wonder what the American society has come to, and what will happen to it if this continues. It may be even too late to avoid catastrophe.

I was a youngster during the WWII years. I was old enough to understand what was going on, but young enough to escape the draft. During those years, there was total American unity. Everyone, absolutely everyone was mobilized to defeat the enemy. And we did. We bombed Germany to rubble, collateral damage be damned. And we won. Nothing indecisive about it. It was total defeat for Germany and Italy. I do not see that resolve now in America. Not even close. The people in charge now are the spawn of the returned WWII GIs. The gimme generation, druggies, high flying high rollers with their maxed-out credit cards and failed second and third mortgages. Driving around in their Caddie SUVs and BMWs. Rich is defined as annual income of $200k+. God help us.

The 2004 elections, narrowly won by George W. Bush as he defeated Al Gore, produced a deadly climate of political hatred within the Democrats. It probably existed before 2004, but that’s my time horizon. George Bush has been demonized, and frankly I don’t know how he has endured it for the last 4 years.

Now, the Clintons are catalyzing a hatred of Obama, because Hillary lost the primary. Some Hillary supporters plan to vote for McCain, to spite Obama. Husband Bill was the albatross around her neck. But she was carrying enough of her own political baggage to do the job without any “help” from Bill. The Clintons continue to drag down the Democrats, and indirectly, the country. Ironically, that is what they claim GW Bush is doing. There is more than enough blame to go around, if you ask me.

It will be very interesting to observe the results of all this dysfunctional behavior. What will happen to America? United in hatred, or what?
