Yep, the hole is gone! There were boxes up there which I had the drywall guy bring down. Some had shutters in them. Amazingly they are exactly the same color that I'd painted my front door. The others were filled with empty plastic jugs. I think he just had them up there to for insulation. We've got new insulation up there now. I'm hoping this house will be warmer this winter.
