Once Again ...

I've been telling myself for much of this past year that when I'm finally done with houses, my body is going to be my next project. I still have this house to finish as we are without a furnace, and our bathrooms and kitchen are not fully functional. However, I don't think I'll be able to get much work done if I put off addressing my health issues any longer.

My airport experience made me decide to DO something, NOW. The question was, what? I've been resting up this week, and also studying up. Surgery is expensive, the recovery, painful, and would only address one joint at a time. I won't rule it out, but I wanted to do some alternative things first.

In the past, I've had good results at eliminating joint pain by adopting a mostly vegan way of eating. I've done it twice, losing over 20 lbs each time. The first time I did it, all pain disappeared completely after two months! The second time, I don't think I stayed on it long enough. Just when I start to feel better and look better I tend to go off of it.

Inspired by Donna, and motivated by how I feel, I'm taking the plunge and going at it again. I'm fortunate in that my husband and daughter are very enthusiastic about eating this way, too. I'm also happy that there are a lot more recipes to follow and get ideas from on the internet.

Getting bored with the food, and feeling unimaginative, were two of the pitfalls I succumbed to last time. We found a couple of websites, StraightUPFood, and 101cookbooks.com/vegan_recipes/ which are full of yummy looking dishes that fit what we're trying to do. If I could turn this into a hobby, or even an obsession, maybe I could see it all the way through.

Perhaps it would help to envision my body as a house... move this, clean that... get rid of the garbage and clutter! If I could deal with the hoards in my house, I ought to be able to address what I've been storing inside my skin? Like my house, it's a daunting task, and to be perfectly honest, one I'm not sure I'm up for. However, just like this house, to not do it would be worse.

Vegan is a great healthy way of life. I was vegan for two years but decided vegetarian was for me. I try to eat vegan a few days a week!!! But! I admit I do love my dairy...

It is amazing how difficult it can be to do something that is clearly, clearly good for you. I went cold turkey and stopped smoking cigarettes in 1977 and have reaped the benefits ever since. However, notwithstanding that I had the determination to accomplish leaving my 3-pack a day habit, I can't seem to muster the same wherewithal to stop eating sweets. I hope you can stick with it. I suggest keeping a calendar and marking off each successful day as you go. It's a tremendous motivator.

That's a great idea! Yeah, I don't know why it's so hard to do what's good for us. So glad you were able to! Sweets are a tough one for me to give up as well. I was going to avoid even the vegan desserts but my daughter was feeling deprived so I made our first no-fat, no-(refined)sugar treat last night. Apple crisp made with raw oats and sweetened with dates. Surprisingly satisfying!

I get emails from https://allrecipes.com/recipes/healthy-recipes/ They have a lot of vegan recipes as well as other ideas. Many people have found that a gluten-free diet has helped them a lot. More of us than we know are gluten intolerant. Both Mr. Tbend and I have family members who feel much better after adopting that lifestyle. I don't know about the area you're living in, but Colorado (my summer home) has many more options for vegans and so on than they did in the past. One place that is not great for vegans or vegetarians is New Orleans - they put some kind of meat in just about everything, even rice.

I've used that website for other things, but I didn't think to use them for this, so thank you for reminding me! We're actually in a good community for healthy eating. We have at least five stores that sell organic produce. The growing season is fairly long, so having a garden is a great source of food, if we could just get one started. I've only recently learned the science behind it, but studies show that dairy and gluten intolerance can be responsible for a multitude of ailments including everything I suffer from. I'm eliminating both just for good measure. It will be an adventure!

Good luck--though it doesn't take luck but a lot of hard work!
