I am trying to decide what to do about something at work. Don't worry. It is nothing really serious. For those of you who don't know it, each of the full-time folks at my library get a weekday off in exchange for working every other Saturday and putting in a long day (9:30-8) on one of the other weekdays. My current day is Tuesday. Our Assistant Director, who is in charge of Reference has Mondays.
I have always joked that I would love to have the day because it is a a sweet day to have. For most months, you get to have a Monday off for one holiday or another, and we get paid for those days. Well, as time has gone by, our Assistant Director has had to arrange more and more weeks when one of our other workers to come in to sub for her so she could go to Board of Trustee meetings or just to get her work done, which is hard to do while covering the Reference Desk.
Well, it seems like it has sort of become a regular, permanent situation for this other person to take that evening. I have been thinking about seeing if I could switch nights so I could have the Monday night. I technically have a lot more seniority than this other person, but I don't want to seem too pushy about it.
I figured I would meet with the Assistant Director, who is in charge of personnel and scheduling. I was going to ask her if this new Monday night schedule was permanent. If it is, I think I will ask for the switch in light of my seniority and my on-going hints at my interest in doing so if she ever gave up the desk on Monday nights.
The funny thing is that if I win my school committee election, I am going to have to switch nights because the school committee meets on Tuesday nights.
