Star Trek ... the New Movie!

As you just read, Thursday evening started off pretty neat. After the meeting, I drove back into town and hit the movie theater for the premiere of the new Star Trek. I have been waiting for some time to see the movie. I have been following the press about it, which probably is not a surprise since you all know how much I am into Trek.

There has been a lot of hype, particularly with the fact that the producer is J.J. Abrams of Lost fame and the lead writers have some history with the Mission: Impossible film franchise. Paramount slowly seeped out news about the cast, grabbing attention.

Well, it was all worth the wait! The cast was truly incredible as they captured the essence of the characters they were hired to play. The special effects are incredible, and there is no shortage of action as the plot slides smoothly from scene to scene, providing glimpses into how the crew of the Enterprise come together.

I would say that it is a misnomer to say this is a prequel and that it tells the tale of how the crew came together for the first time to save the Federation. If you go in with that expectation, it will leave you quite stunned, particularly if you are a fan with a lot of knowledge of the series. This is a resetting of the series. The story is masterfully crafted, and I think it will reinvigorate interest in the franchise.

My one big complaint is that the main villain is pretty flat. He is barely developed. In all honesty, the few details that are provided are almost unimportant. He is simply a plot device, pure and simple. I sort of felt bad for Eric Bana (the actor) in a big way since he was almost unnecessary. He does set up the storyline necessary to kick off the story, though.

I would be really curious to see what other Trekkers are saying about it. The main reason is because there are so many shocking things that happen in the movie. I don't want to go into any details because I hate the idea of throwing spoilers out there that ruin the movie for people. I can see fans either really loving it or freaking out!
