The Interview

With things being so busy, I haven't been doing much blogging, but there has been a lot going on. Don't worry ... there really hasn't been anything bad happening. It is just that I haven't really been up to doing much posting at night.

One of the big things that have been going on is that I have actually submitted an application for another position. As you all know, I really love the job that I have so it is not because I feel the need to move on. It is really just a wonderful opportunity to take what I do to a new level.

In Rhode Island, we have an Office of Library and Information Services. It is the state-level organization that is dedicated to coordinating library services in the state. OLIS helps distribute state and federal funds to various programs at libraries across the state. They also work to bridge connections between public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries, research libraries, and spacial libraries.

Last fall, my good friend and co-instructor at the URI libraries school stepped down and retired from her full-time position at OLIS. She was the Coordinator of Children's Services at the office, and she has probably had a greater affect on library services in the state than just about anyone in recent time.

It took some time, largely because of economic issues in the state, but OLIS posted her position in March. It was adjusted slightly and now also includes young adult services. As a result, the new Coordinator of Youth Services position will focus on everything relating to those from birth to about high school graduation. It would give me an opportunity to help provide services to children and teens all over the state.

On Monday morning, I had m interview. I was surprised by how nervous I wasn't before and during the interview. I am not sure why. It is not that I thought I was a shoe-in for the position. There are a huge number of qualified librarians out there, and we all have our talents and gifts.

The interview felt more like a relaxed conversation than anything. I knew that I was being evaluated, obviously, but it was a very comfortable atmosphere to have an interview. What is even better is that I think I did about as good as I could have during the interview. While that doesn't mean I have any greater chance at the position that the other candidates, it does mean that I can be very happy with how I did.

Whether I get the position or not, I know it will go to the person who is most qualified. That is really what is most important for the young people we all serve. I am lucky in that either way, I can continue to do that.
