Looking Back on High School

The last couple of days I have been a bit nostalgic for my high school years. I think it comes down to the warming weather and the fact that I took out my old Madonna greatest hits albume (The Blonde Collection). In high school, I had three best friends: Jay, Tamathy, and Shelly. We used to spend hours driving around in the backwoods of Foster and Scituate in his jeep, which had the monicker Remy Lorraine (long story). Most of the time we did that, we would have that tape or a similar one for Billy Joel playing, and we would be joining in shouting at the top of our lungs.

Along the same lines, I was talking with one of the kids in the computer lab. She said that she knew I had a MySpace and wanted to know if we could be "friends." I said sure, and we went through the steps to do that. We were talking a little bit because I know how saavy she is with MySpace, and I have been having trouble with completing the school part of my profile there. Basically, I could only post my high school and none of the rest.

Well, while she was giving me some training on filling in the rest, I mistakenly clicked on the name of my high school. Presto, it brought me to a screen where you could search people who went to my high school. I narrowed it down to an age range around me, and I found a ton of people I went to high school with.

So, I ended up getting caught up in browsing through 37 screens I people I remembered. What I thought interesting was how many people were gay, lesbian, or bi! I remember being made fun of at the time by some people because they assumed I was gay. Apparently, they were a little more up on things than I was at the time. I guess it turned out that I was not alone! It turned out that I found 6 gay guys, 2 lesbians, and a bisexual woman. I guess were were a very colorful high school.

It was fun to shoot through the list and see what happened to various people. I got to see tons of kids making up the next generation. I sent out a ton of messages and friend requests. It would be cool to reconnect with some of the people I found.

How neat to discover other gays within your peer group! I don't know how it is for gay kids these days. I can only hope that we have become more accepting- and kinder than we once were. Being gay is not a choice; it is not like choosing to wear a wild shirt or ghastly looking pants to draw attention to oneself. The protective mother hen comes out in me when I see kids who are different- for any reason so long as they are not hostile or destructive. I have zero tolerance when it comes to hatefilness and aggression.

I used to sing to Billy Joel all the time. I loved his stuff, still do. High school is a distant memory. I understand what martin is saying. I do remember this really good friend I had named Butch (yep they used that as a name back then). He and I were such great buds, I would love to see him now. He's older than I am!

Actually it is, AJ--how about 54 years ago??? Besides, I had very little to do with/in high school--I was too busy hanging around Times Square cruising and becoming 'sophisticated'--I went to classes just to pass--never did become friends with anyone there.

It's fun finding people you "used to know". I'm not on MySpace...just facebook....and while I don't have fond memories of high school at all, it has been interesting, to say the least, to find out what people have been up to.

You already know how fond I am of my high school years and how close I have stayed with many of my classmates. If you want an idea of how attached I really am, you can check something out on MySpace. (By the way, how come we're not friends on MySpace?)

Anyway, listening to certain music or being in a particular place can trigger those nostalgiac thoughts. I'm glad to hear that yours are good ones.

When I saw your title I thought...."Do we have to?" Lol The year you were born I was in my first year of high school. Well, 1976/1977 my freshman year. It was my favorite!! My sophomore was pretty good but, my Junior and especially Senior years were the worst. Glad you have good memories about your high school years!!
