Kinsey Milhone is trying to settle into a new life after all of the changes that occured as a result of the las tbook. She is now sharing office space with a law firm that she helps from time to time. She is brought into a case when another private investigator (Morley Shine) who is helping to research evidence that can be used in a civil murder case dies of a heart attack. She has to pick up where he left off.
As she digs into the facts, she learns the original murder was not as simple as it first appeared ... and neither was Morley's death. The case centers around David Barney, who was charged with the murder of his wealthy wife Isabel, who was killed when someone shot her through the peep hole in the front door as she was looking through it. The case has no shortage of suspects as few people seemed to really like Isabel or each other in her social circle.
Grafton does a wonderful job of including some humor with a storyline tha tdeals with Henry, Kinsey's older landlord. He is getting a visit from his brother who is recovering from a heart attack and his resulting status as a hypochondriac. Henry and Kinsey turn to their local tavern owner, Rosie to bring him out of his shell.
I really was thrilled with this one. Kinsey is back up to snuff with this one after her last stint, which placed her undercover with a conspiracy for insurance fraud. I just flew through this adventure.
