Charlotte Usher is on her way to being a queen bee at school. Well, at least that is what she really hopes. She tries to do everything she can to be a part of the "in crowd," and it seems like she is going to get her chance on the first day of school when Damon Dylan, the boy of her dreams and boy friend of the most popular girl, needs her help to pass biology so he can go to the big holiday dance coming up. Unfortunately, things don't quite go as she plans, and she chokes to death on a gummy bear while walking in the school hallway being excited about her new-found prospects.
Fear not ... the story is not over. She finds herself sent to the local run-down house for Dead Ed to learn the ins and outs of being a ghost ... think Beetlejuice. One of the biggest things the newly dead have to learn is that they have to start letting go of life so they can prepare to move on. Charlotte is not nearly ready to move on.
An opportunity comes in the form of Scarlet, the goth younger sister of the previously mentioned school diva. Not only can Scarlet see the newly dead Charlotte, but she is willing to let Charlotte possess her, though that would probably not be the case if she knew it would mean her body trying out for cheerleading and getting ready for the quickly approaching holiday dance.
Things become even more challenging as our leading ladies start to realize they are not the people they thought they were and even start to share some interests.
As you can probably guess, dark humor is at the core of this book, but it sneaks in a nice message about the importance of just being yourself rather than trying to live up to expectations (both those of others as well as your own). The book is fun, fun, fun, and should have tons of appeal to readers of all ages.
