Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris

WARNING: Fans of True Blood may not want to read this review since it reveals some major plot twists for the characters you are now viewing.
In other words.....

====SPOILER ALERT!!!====

It turns out that vampires are not the only supernatural beings ready to come out of the closet ... or the coffin? Shapeshifers and weres, encouraged by the not-so-bad reaction to the revelation that vampires do exist, have decided to follow suit. In some ways, things go well while in others, not so much. This is particularly true of her former friend and co-worker Arlene.

Sookie is drawn right into the troubling side of things when her pregnant, werepanther sister-in-law is found dead and crucified outside of Merlotte's, the bar and grill in which she works. Considering the status of the victim, Sookie can't help but wonder if her neighbors in Bon Temps are as open minded as she would have thought.

Of course, with Sookie, things are never that easy. While she is trying to help her brother Jason deal with his loss and figure out what really happened, she learns that her great grandfather, a fae, is at the center of a civil war being fought over whether the fairyfolk should be interacting with humans.

As a result of all the danger Sookie finds herself in, she also finds that she must accept Eric's offer of betrothal to keep her safe.

The book definitely hops along, and while there is a lot going on, it is easy for fans to keep up. Lots of familiar characters pop up throughout the story to either just have a cameo or to serve an important role. It is quickly clear that things will no long be the same in Bon Temps.

One of the things I miss in True Blood is that it really lacks the large amount of humor that is evident in the books. I have seen that more of it can be seen in the second season, which started a few weeks ago. I am glad that Harris did not decide to shift it to the darker world view that is evident in the show.
